Mob Vandalises Gunjur Immigration Post Following Drug Suspects’ Arrest

By Makutu Manneh
The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has reported that its Gunjur immigration post was vandalised by a mob of youths protesting the arrest of three suspected drug peddlers by operatives of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG).
According to the department, the Gunjur post accommodates both Immigration and DLEAG personnel. The incident occurred after the suspects were transported by DLEAG officers to Kotu for further processing.
In a statement, the GID said the agitated crowd attacked the facility, pelting the complex with stones and causing damage to the roof, office doors, and windows. No injuries to personnel were reported.
The department disclosed that, in collaboration with DLEAG officers, about 20 individuals from Gunjur village were apprehended in connection with the incident.
“The angry mob attacked the immigration station, throwing stones at the complex, causing damage to the roof, office doors, and windows. No personnel were injured,” the GID stated. “These individuals are currently undergoing screening and will subsequently be handed over to the Gambia Police Force for further investigations.”
The GID strongly condemned the act of vandalism and what it described as lawlessness, warning that such actions pose serious, life-threatening risks to security personnel deployed to serve communities and maintain public trust.
The department further urged communities and citizens to exercise restraint, support law enforcement agencies, and help protect the safety of security personnel and government facilities.
