The Leader and Secretary General of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mama Kandeh, has urged Gambians not to support his political ambition if they believe he is unable to meaningfully empower the country’s youth, stressing that the future of The Gambia depends on honest leadership and sustained investment in young people.

Addressing supporters in Manjai on Sunday, Mr. Kandeh said he would prefer voters to support leaders they genuinely trust rather than cast their ballots out of loyalty, pressure, or deception. He emphasized that youth empowerment must take precedence over personal or political interests.

“I need every vote, but the moment you believe that I cannot empower the youth, go to someone who can. I will not be upset about that, and I will even support you, because we are all working in the interest of the country, and the future of this country is very important,” he said.

Mr. Kandeh also called on politicians to stop misleading young people with promises they cannot fulfill, urging the youth to assess leaders based on their track records, integrity, and genuine commitment to change.

“Everything we do should be about the youth. If we truly want to change this country, we must invest in young people, and politicians must put an end to deception,” he stated.

He further encouraged young Gambians to critically examine political leaders and make informed decisions about who is capable of moving the country forward and creating opportunities for them.

“I am a politician. Open your eyes and look at Mama Kandeh very well. If you are not satisfied, go to someone you are satisfied with,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Kandeh stressed that the desire for votes would not compel him to make false promises, adding that his goal is to help build a Gambia that future generations can be proud of.

“Wanting your vote will not make me lie to you, because The Gambia is not a lie. We want to leave behind a country that everyone will be proud of,” he said.
