The United Gambian Front (UGF) has urged citizens to prepare for the 2026 presidential elections, citing ongoing economic challenges and governance concerns. The party’s leader, Hon. Bakary K. Badjie, also called for accountability over allegations involving former Chief of Defence Staff Mamat O.A. Cham.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Hon. Badjie addressed a range of national issues, highlighting the hardships faced by ordinary Gambians. According to the UGF, citizens continue to grapple with rising prices of basic commodities, unreliable electricity supply, unemployment, corruption, and broader concerns about governance and institutional accountability.
“The time has come for meaningful and responsible leadership that puts the interests of the people first,”the statement read. The movement further emphasized that under Hon. Badjie’s leadership, the UGF offers “a vision of hope, integrity, development, and national renewal.”
The party called on Gambians both at home and in the diaspora to actively engage in political dialogue and participate in the democratic process.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous, and more united Gambia. Together, we can bring positive change through the ballot box,” UGF said. “2026 is an opportunity to choose a new direction for our nation.”
In a separate statement, Hon. Badjie—who previously served as National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang Karanai—addressed allegations against former CDS Mamat O.A. Cham, describing them as “too serious to be ignored.”
“He should face justice to serve as an example to others and to demonstrate that no individual is above the law,” Hon. Badjie said.
Hon. Badjie underscored the principle that public office entails responsibility rather than impunity.
“The nation is not the property of any one person; it belongs to all its citizens. Accountability must prevail so that future leaders and public officials understand that power is a responsibility, not a license for impunity.”
