UDP Alleges Barrow Bribed Voters, NPP Denies Allegation
By Ramatoulie Jawo
The United Democratic Party leader lawyer, Ousainu Darboe has alleged that President Barrow or his agents bribed voters in Munyagen, Kitty and Sandu Misira to vote for the NPP in the December election.
Ousainu Darboe said the election of president Adama Barrow on the December 4 presidential elections was “invalid” because of “corrupt practices” and that was why they rejected the results.
Darboe added that they were denied the opportunity to present evidence in support of allegations of corrupt practices committed during the campaign period.
“At least 26 incidents of corrupt practices committed by Adama barrow or his agents with his knowledge include but not limited on the 9 November 2021, during the elections campaign one million dalasi was purportedly donated to Munyagen in support of the villagers efforts to build a health facility and the team was led by Musa Drammeh who was accompanied by the Governor and the Seyfo for Jukadu District and Musa drammeh told the villagers that now Barrow has fulfilled his promise then he must have his ballot box filled with tokens and the event was part of the documentary evidence,” Darboe added.
He added that in Kitty, at least a total of D45, 000 was again purportedly given to the youth of the village by Mr. Ahmed Gitteh in a bid to garner support for President Barrow.
“On 30 November 2021, a video in Sandu Misira revealed the NPP distribution of a milling machine and Saika Jatta was heard cautioning the residence of Sandu Misira the only thing that will stop you from having a tractor will be, if the NPP and President Barrow lose the elections,” said Darboe.
Meanwhile, Darboe said upon consultation with the UDP national executive, they agreed that they owe it to the party supporters to reveal evidence of “election malpractices”, which formed the basis of the press conference.
The UDP leader made the remarks at a press conference on Tuesday at his residence in pipeline.
However, the NPP spokesperson, Lamin Queen Jammeh denied the allegation. He said the matters referred to by the opposition party were in response to the communities’ request.
“I am going to refute all of them because my understanding about bribery is that there is a characteristic way in which it is done. One of those conditions is that it is clandestinely done. Many a time, not welcoming public knowledge about it. So, if you look at all of these things, I was in Munyagen when the President supported the community for their community health infrastructure. Something that was publicly done, as that one was, for responding to a community’s request cannot be explained as a bribe. And I am sure, it is in the same way, all others were done,” he said.
