The subregional body must prioritize the interests and welfare of its member states over personal agendas. Upholding transparency and accountability should be core principles of ECOWAS, ensuring that leaders are held responsible for their actions.

Additionally, ECOWAS should actively promote cooperation and unity among its member states. By fostering a sense of shared identity and common goals, the organization can discourage division and promote a collective approach to regional challenges.

Furthermore, it is crucial for ECOWAS to engage with and listen to the voices of the youth. The younger generation represents the future and should have a significant role in decision-making processes. By empowering and including them in the political discourse, ECOWAS can ensure sustainable and inclusive democratic governance.

Moreover, ECOWAS must work towards reducing its dependence on former colonial powers and prioritizing the genuine development and well-being of its member states. It should actively pursue economic policies that promote self-sufficiency and sustainable socio-economic growth, ensuring that the region’s resources are utilized for the benefit of its people rather than to appease external actors.
Additionally, it is important to address specific instances of leaders disregarding democratic principles within the ECOWAS region. For example, President Macky Sall of Senegal should be urged to respect the Senegalese constitution and not postpone elections. Such actions undermine democracy and set a dangerous precedent for other countries in the region.

It is disappointing to see leaders like President Tinubu of Nigeria being influenced by external powers and failing to uphold the values of truth, democracy, and the rule of law. This not only tarnishes their reputation but also reflects poorly on the West African bloc as a whole.

In order to maintain the credibility of ECOWAS, it must take a strong stance against leaders who deviate from democratic principles and ensure that such actions are not repeated in the future. ECOWAS should actively monitor and address any instances of leaders being influenced by personal agendas or external pressures, in order to protect democracy and the rule of law within its member states.
For ECOWAS to preserve democracy and the rule of law, it must prioritize transparency, accountability, unity, and youth engagement. By doing so, the subregional body can discourage self-centered actions and bias, safeguard the interests of its member states, and foster genuine development and prosperity for all.
