Public School Teachers Asked To ‘Put Their Tools Down’
The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU) has ordered all public school teachers in the country to report to school but they should not teach.
“Teachers in all public schools across the country should put their tools down until advised otherwise,” the GTU said in a statement on Saturday…“Please, continue comporting yourselves, report to your various schools and kindly refer all enquiries to the Office of the Secretary General.”
The National Executive Committee of the union passed the resolution after it held an emergency executive meeting on Saturday (12th February 2022).
The Union said it took the decision after it had found that teachers in Region 3, a good number of teachers in Region 1, and teachers in all the Senior Secondary Schools involved and in Region 2, have not been paid their Covid-19 allowance by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
GTU said the COVID-19 Allowance is meant for teachers who were engaged in 6 working days a week, during the COVID period.
Meanwhile, teachers in some schools in Region 2 have adhered to the GTU’s call, as students returned home after hours at school without lessons.
