President Barrow orders inquiry into Kanifing gas explosion

Gambian leader Adama Barrow has ordered an investigation into a gas explosion in Kanifing Industrial Area that consumed millions of dalasis worth of goods.

The incident happened on Sunday evening after fire caught a gar tanker belonging to a company owned by one Mr Haddim.

The fire quickly transferred to other warehouses in the surrounding and burnt to ground millions worth of goods. The fire also consumed an entire vehicle garage.

“Our next move is to set up an inquiry to look into what has happened and established the facts—what was the cause of the fire and how to avoid it in the future,” said President Barrow.

The Gambian leader visited the scene of the accident on Monday morning. He described the accident as quite devastating.

Barrow promised that the investigator will also look at other institutions that are dealing in gas in order to establish if they are following safety standards.

Meanwhile, the Gambian leader also paid tribute to the fire officers who have been battling to put out the fire from Sunday evening to late Monday morning.

The fire incident prompted a debate among Gambians about the lack of equipment with the fire service to deal with such situation.
