NDP Leader Kebba Madi Not Arrested, His Friend Detained

By Makutu Manneh
National Democratic Party leader Kebba Madi Bojang has denied widespread reports that he had been arrested by police. However he told Kerr Fatou that a friend of his Muhammed Raney, has been taken into custody and is being questioned about the source of the NDP campaign vehicles and motorbikes.
Bojang made the clarification in a phone interview with Kerr Fatou while waiting outside the anti-crime training school where Mr Raney is being held.
Bojang further disclosed that officers from special investigations unit (SIU) went to Raney’s residence over allegations of counterfeiting. He said a search of the entire compound was conducted in his presence and nothing incriminating was found, adding that the officers later acknowledged they had been wrongly informed.
However, he said Raney was subsequently asked to report to the Old Yundum police station to give a statement but upon his arrival, he was instead taken to the anti crime unit.
He said Raney declined to allow the officers to ride in his car, citing concerns that evidence could be planted against him.
“Upon arrival at the anti-crime training school, I was denied entrance to the complex on the orders of senior officers and I abide by that and decided to remain outside the gate”, Bojang told Kerr Fatou. He said the speculation that he had been arrested stemmed from him spending the night outside the complex while waiting for his friend.
Bojang said he was later informed by Raney’s wife that investigators were asking about the source of funds used to purchase vehicles and motorbikes for the NDP. “Raney told the officers he did not know the amounts and that they should direct such questions to me”, Bojang said.
The NDP leader described Raney’s detention as politically motivated, arguing that his friend had no financial involvement in the party’s activities and had only attended rallies and escorted him on personal purchases.
“Raney’s arrest is a targeted move against me, Kebba Madi and NDP. This is what is happening,” he concluded.
