National Security Adviser Abubakarr Suleiman Jeng said recent incidents of knife attacks and armed robberies should not be interpreted as evidence that The Gambia is no longer peaceful, arguing that such crimes can occur even as a country experiences development.

Speaking on GRTS Radio’s ministerial program, Mr. Jeng said peace and development are closely intertwined, comparing the relationship to that of a person and their shadow.

He acknowledged public concern over reports of stabbings, killings, and armed robberies but said those incidents do not negate the country’s overall stability.

“The world has agreed that a developing country goes with notions like, ‘There is no security.’ The development of a country goes with people doing what they aren’t supposed to do,” Mr. Jeng said.

He said maintaining security is the responsibility of the country’s security services but acknowledged that law enforcement officers cannot be present everywhere at all times.

Mr. Jeng called on religious and traditional leaders, women, and young people to work alongside the security services by remaining vigilant and helping to strengthen community safety.

He also urged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to the appropriate authorities, describing public cooperation as essential to preventing crime.

The national security adviser said the government remains committed to preserving peace while ensuring that the country’s development continues, adding that security agencies are doing everything possible to protect lives and property.
