Kemo Ceesay formally assumed the presidency of the Gambia Football Federation on Thursday, taking over from Lamin Kabba Bajo and beginning a new four-year administration after Bajo’s eight years at the helm of the country’s football governing body.
The transfer of power, held at Football House in Kanifing, came days after Ceesay was elected president at the federation’s Elective Congress.
Bajo, addressing football officials and other stakeholders at the handover ceremony, said leadership transitions were a necessary part of institutional development, acknowledging that no administration could accomplish every objective during its time in office.
He pledged to support Ceesay and the incoming executive, saying he and other outgoing officials would remain available to provide advice and assistance as the new administration begins implementing its agenda.
“Be assured that myself and every member of the football family, especially outgoing executive members, will be at the disposal of the new executive to give all the support,” Bajo said.
He expressed hope that the new administration would fully implement the commitments outlined in its manifesto and create an environment in which clubs and other football initiatives could thrive.
Ceesay, formally accepting responsibility for the federation, struck a tone of accountability, saying that from Thursday onward he would take responsibility for the decisions and activities of the GFF.
“From today, I am in charge; I am responsible for all activities of this football federation,” Ceesay said. “In case anything goes wrong, I will take full charge.”
Ceesay also credited Bajo’s administration with helping stabilize the federation and establishing a foundation on which the new leadership could build.
The transition closes an eight-year chapter under Bajo and begins Ceesay’s four-year mandate at a time when the new administration has pledged to strengthen domestic football, improve professionalism, and broaden the federation’s development efforts.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Ceesay presented Bajo with a certificate of appreciation recognizing his service to Gambian football and his role in facilitating a peaceful transfer of leadership.
