The president’s National People’s Party (NPP) has won more seats across the country, but the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has garnered a higher number of popular votes cast in the just concluded ward Councilor elections.
Across all regions in the country, the United Democratic Party won 146141 votes (36.95 percent of the votes cast) while the National People’s Party won 137344 votes (34.73 percent of the votes cast) across the country.
APP won 449 votes (0.11 %), APRC won 17849 votes (4.51%), GDC won 28520 votes (7.21%), GFA won 294 votes (0.07%), GMC won 405 votes (0.10%), Independent Candidates won 42551 votes (10.76%), NRP won 4809 votes (1.22%), PAP 375 won votes (0.09%), PDOIS won 14210 votes (3.59%) and PPP with 2521 Votes (0.64%).
A told total of 395468 votes were cast across the country, representing 41% of the total registered voters.
With 53 seats, the National People’s Party had the most seats, while the United Democratic Party had the most popular votes and 44 seats. The remaining seats were distributed among the other parties and independent candidates: 5 for Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC), 4 for National Reconciliation Party (NRP), 5 for Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), and 1 for the People’s Democratic Independence for Socialism (PDOIS) and 8 for Independent candidates.
