Ebrima Nyang, Administrative Secretary I of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has called for a level playing field among political parties seeking leadership positions in potential coalitions.
Speaking on Star TV’s Talk to the Nation program, Nyang emphasized the importance of an inclusive and equitable process, where parties of all sizes feel empowered to participate in leadership discussions.
“I believe all political parties should be given a fair ground,” Nyang said, advocating for a political environment in which no party feels marginalized. He also stressed the need for open dialogue, urging parties to engage constructively:
“Let’s get to the table and let everyone know they can come with their people.”
Nyang further highlighted the central role of candidate selection in coalition building, noting that public support should outweigh party size in determining leadership.
“The candidate that we should present to the Gambian people counts a lot,” he said. He added that a leader’s acceptance by the electorate is dynamic and not necessarily tied to the size of their party:
“That candidate can come from a smaller party and be accepted by the Gambian people. The candidate can come from a bigger party and be rejected.”
