GDC Leader Criticizes IGP’s National Tour, Suggests Political Motives

By Buba Gagigo
Hon. Mama Kandeh, Secretary General and Party Leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has voiced strong criticism of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Seedy Mucktarr Touray, alleging that his recent nationwide tour may be politically motivated.
Speaking at a political gathering in Sare Njobo, Upper River Region, on Sunday, Kandeh questioned the nature of the IGP’s activities during the tour—particularly the warm receptions by women’s groups—which he claims resemble political rallies rather than official police engagements.
“I saw the IGP traveling across the country. I’m not sure if it’s a political tour, but I want to say this clearly: many IGPs have toured the country in the past, but none have been welcomed by women’s ‘compins’ as if they were politicians,” Kandeh stated. “If the IGP wants to engage in politics, he should remove his uniform and officially join the political arena. Touring the country in uniform while receiving political-style welcomes is unprecedented in The Gambia.”
Kandeh further warned that the GDC would not tolerate any political intimidation or sabotage, citing reports of individuals allegedly removing his party’s flags.
“Some of our members recently put up GDC flags, and we’ve received information that certain individuals took them down. I want to make this very clear to the IGP: if anyone is caught removing our flags, there will be consequences,” he warned. “We respect every party’s right to display their symbols, but we will not accept tampering with ours.”
The GDC leader also signaled his party’s willingness to engage in dialogue with other political parties, including President Adama Barrow’s camp, ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.
“We are open to discussions with all political parties, big or small. They all represent Gambians,” Kandeh noted. “We’re not saying we will join forces with anyone yet, but we are ready to talk—yes, even with Adama Barrow. What matters is working together to rescue the country. GDC has a solid foundation and a clean track record. Come 2026, by God’s will, we believe we will emerge victorious.”
