A video circulating on social media has captured two uniformed police officers engaging in a heated exchange with an elderly man, during which they hurled insults at him in the local language. The incident, which occurred in Tanji village in the West Coast Region on Sunday, has sparked widespread public condemnation.

In the footage, one of the officers can be heard telling the elderly man, “This is where you come to report your cases, yet you don’t know anything,” before both officers proceeded to insult him.

While the circumstances leading to the altercation remain unclear, the Gambia Police Force (GPF) has responded by instructing the officers involved to report to the Human Rights and Professional Standards Unit for investigation.

“The Gambia Police Force is aware of an incident caught on camera showing officers engaging in grossly unprofessional conduct. Those involved have been instructed to report to the Human Rights and Professional Standards Unit for investigation. The GPF strongly condemns such misconduct and remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights. GPF appreciates the public’s vigilance and partnership in ensuring a responsible and accountable police force,” the statement read.

The incident has reignited discussions about police conduct and professionalism in The Gambia, with many calling for stricter measures to ensure accountability within the force.
