The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 46 suspected would-be irregular migrants in Batokunku, West Coast Region, as authorities continue efforts to curb dangerous sea journeys from the country.
The migrants were intercepted by officers of the department’s Border Patrol Unit stationed at the Tanji Migration Management Unit (MMU).
According to the GID, all 46 migrants are male. The group comprises 43 Gambians and three Senegalese, including 10 minors.
“The intercepted would-be migrants are currently held at the Tanji MMU as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the aborted sea voyage,” the department said in a statement.
The GID did not provide further details about the planned journey or indicate whether any suspected organizers had been identified or arrested.
The department reiterated its commitment to combating irregular migration and protecting vulnerable people from the dangers associated with irregular migration routes.
