The Gambia Immigration Department has arrested a man suspected of facilitating irregular migration and intercepted 11 people allegedly preparing to embark on a “backway” journey, the department said.
The operation was carried out on Friday, Sept. 26, by officers of the department’s Border Patrol Unit in Tanji at Batokunku in the West Coast Region.
According to the Immigration Department, the 11 intercepted migrants included eight Gambians, five men and three women, and three Senegalese men.
Authorities also arrested Madi Camara, a 26-year-old Malian national, who is suspected of facilitating the planned journey.
“The eleven intercepted migrants and the suspected facilitator are currently being held as investigations continue to establish the circumstances around the planned irregular migration journey,” the department said in a statement.
The Immigration Department said it remained committed to combating irregular migration and protecting vulnerable people from the dangers associated with irregular migration routes.
