FM Tangara congratulates and bids farewell to outgoing Chinese Ambassador
BANJUL, 2 June 2022: The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, today, 2 June 2022 received in his office the out-going Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Gambia H.E Ma Jianchun. H.E Ma was at the Foreign Ministry complex to bid farewell to Foreign Minister Tangara at the end of his tour of duty to The Gambia.
Prior to his visit to the Ministry, Ambassador MA was decorated “Insignia of Grand Officer of the order of The Republic of The Gambia GORG (Honourary)” by the President of The Republic of The Gambia, H.E Adama Barrow in recognition and appreciation of his service and his work to forster China-Gambia relations.
Following the award ceremony held at the State House, Foreign Minister Tangara and Ambassador MA proceeded to the Foreign Ministry, where he welcomed the Chinese Ambassador and commended him for his outstanding contribution to the development of Gambia-China friendship during his tour of duty.
Dr. Tangara also congratulated him on the award given to him by President Barrow, which he said symbolises appreciation, China-Gambia strong bilateral ties, and the excellent work Ambassador Ma rendered during his tenure. He also commended the President of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese government for the cooperation between the two countries.
For his part, Ambassador MA expressed thanks and appreciation to the Foreign Ministry for the support rendered to the Chinese Embassy during his tenure. He lauded the good relations that exist between the two countries and promised to continue to support The Gambia.
The two countries have achieved a lot in recent years and china for its part have provided development assistance to The Gambia in areas such as; education, agriculture, health, and infrastructural development. China has also played a huge role in supporting The Gambia and made significant contributions towards the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Tangara reaffirmed his country’s adherence to the one-China policy. He said that like China, Gambia sticks to an independent foreign policy and firmly supports multilateralism.
The People’s Republic of China fist established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Gambia on December 14, 1974, and in June 2018, Gambia and China convened their first Joint Commission on Economic, Trade, Investment and Technical Cooperation in Beijing to facilitate formal bilateral economic and trade engagements between the two countries.
FM Tangara also gifted a painting to the outgoing Ambassador.
