Ousainou Bojang, First Accused

The trial of Ousainou Bojang and his sister, Amie Bojang, resumed with the defence presenting two witnesses—Sulayman Faal and Famara Bojang—in support of Ousainou Bojang’s alibi.

Ousainou Bojang stands accused of the fatal shooting of two police officers and the wounding of a third on September 12, 2023, at the Sukuta traffic lights. He faces multiple charges, including murder and terrorism, all of which he has denied. His sister, Amie Bojang, is charged as an accessory after the fact.

The second defence witness, Sulayman Faal, testified under oath that he had been staying at a lodge in Brufut, where Ousainou Bojang worked as a security guard. Faal stated that he and his partner—whom he referred to as his “white lady”—had been tenants at the lodge for three months, during which Ousainou was responsible for their needs.

According to Faal, on the night of September 12th, at around 11:00 p.m., Ousainou came to his residence at the lodge to inform him about a reported shooting incident involving police officers, which he had seen on the “What’s On Gambia” platform. Faal stated that Ousainou advised him to stay indoors due to the nature of the news. He claimed this was evidence that Bojang could not have been involved in the shooting.

The next day, Faal testified, he learned from Famara Bojang that Ousainou was being accused of the shooting. Faal said he was shocked by the news, insisting that Ousainou was at the lodge with him during the time of the incident.

Under questioning by defence counsel Lamin J. Darboe, Faal maintained that he had seen Ousainou twice that night and believed he had remained at the lodge. He also confirmed that Ousainou was employed as a security guard at the lodge, along with individuals named Famara and Dodou. Other residents at the lodge, he added, included Sharon and Alex.

During cross-examination, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) questioned the reliability of Faal’s account, pressing him on the specifics of his stay at the lodge. Faal admitted he could not recall the exact date he moved in but affirmed he had been residing there for three months and insisted Ousainou Bojang was innocent.

When asked whether Ousainou had mentioned any plans to travel to Senegal, Faal said he had not. He also confirmed seeing Ousainou the morning after the incident.

The DPP probed Faal’s relationship with Ousainou, suggesting that he may be biased in his testimony due to friendship. Faal denied the allegation, asserting that he would only defend someone he believed to be innocent and would advise them to confess if guilty.

On further questioning by Amie Bojang’s lawyer, L.K. Mboge, Faal stated he did not know the second accused personally and reiterated that Ousainou had never told him he committed any crime or intended to flee.

With no further questions, Faal was discharged, and the defence called its third witness, Famara Bojang, a Brufut resident and relative of both accused.

Famara testified that on the evening of September 12th, he received a call from Ousainou, who apologised for previously accusing him of causing issues with his partner. Ousainou claimed he had discovered that his social media accounts had been hacked and attributed the disruption to a woman whose photo he later showed Famara.

Later that evening, Ousainou visited Famara in person, reiterated his apology, and again pointed to the woman in the photograph as the hacker responsible for leaking his private images. Famara dismissed this explanation, stating that had such content been circulated online, it would have reached them all.

Famara also testified that Ousainou expressed an intention to apologise to their stepfather, noting that tensions had arisen in the family compound due to his recent behaviour.

The court adjourned the trial until May 27, 2025, due to time constraints.
