Clerk’s Office Defends National Assembly’s 2027 Budget Before FPAC

The Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly on Thursday appeared before the Standing Committee on Finance and Public Accounts (FPAC) to defend the Assembly’s proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year.
In a statement, the National Assembly said the appearance marked the beginning of the formal defense of its 2027 draft budget, as parliamentary committees also began bilateral budget discussions with ministries, departments, and agencies ahead of the new fiscal year.
The engagements follow the conclusion of a pre-budget analysis retreat held over the weekend, during which National Assembly members reviewed revenue trends, fiscal assumptions, and proposed sectoral allocations.
The bilateral sessions are a key part of the Assembly’s budget scrutiny process, allowing committees to examine the proposed estimates of revenue and expenditure in greater detail and question government institutions about their requested allocations, spending plans and priorities.
During the sessions, ministries, departments and agencies are expected to justify their proposed allocations and respond to questions from lawmakers about how the funds would be used.
“The bilateral engagements are expected to continue over the coming days as Committees conclude their sector-by-sector analysis before the formal consideration of the Appropriation Bill in plenary,” the National Assembly said.
The committee hearings are part of the parliamentary process leading to consideration of the 2027 Appropriation Bill, which will authorize government spending for the coming fiscal year.
