The Brikama Area Council has approved D16,777,439.42 in scholarships for students across its jurisdiction, a move officials say is aimed at expanding access to higher education in the region.
In a statement published on its official page on Wednesday, the council said the decision was unanimously adopted during its monthly sitting on April 21, 2026.
According to the council, the allocation will support 567 students in total. Of that number, 265 continuing students from 2025 will receive D6,968,089, while 302 newly selected students for 2026 will be allocated D9,809,350.42.
“This investment reflects the Council’s commitment to enhancing access to education, in line with its 2025–2029 Strategic Blueprint,” the statement said.
Scholarship support has been a recurring feature of local government development efforts in The Gambia, where councils are mandated to contribute to human capital development and the delivery of social services.
Under the Local Government Act of 2002, local authorities are empowered to design and implement programs aimed at improving education and other essential public services within their jurisdictions.
