Several recruits with the Gambia Armed Forces were rushed to Kanifing General Hospital on Friday after collapsing, according to unconfirmed reports, with at least one recruit possibly having died.
The news was first reported by What’s On – Gambia, which cited an unnamed source. Kerr Fatou could not independently verify the circumstances surrounding the collapses or the reports of a death, and we are seeking information from military authorities.
According to What’s On – Gambia’s initial report, one or two recruits may have died, while several others were referred to Ndemban Clinic for treatment. What’s On Gambia said it was still working to determine what had caused the collapses, citing conflicting accounts: some pointed to possible food poisoning, while others suggested the recruits had fallen ill after participating in a Combat Fitness Test.
Family members of the affected recruits and senior military officials had gathered at Kanifing General Hospital as of Friday, according to the report.
