The Gambia Immigration Department said it intercepted 33 suspected irregular migrants in Essau on Aug. 17, as authorities continue efforts to curb irregular migration.
The operation was carried out by the department’s Migration Management and Border Patrol units based in Barra.
According to the department, all 33 people intercepted were male. The group included 18 Gambians, 14 Senegalese, and one Guinean national.
“The suspected would-be migrants are currently at the Barra Migration Management Office for profiling and further screening,” the department said.
The Immigration Department did not provide details about the circumstances of the interception or the group’s intended destination.
The department reiterated its commitment to combating irregular migration while promoting what it described as safe, regular, and orderly migration in The Gambia.
