Joint security forces intercepted 22 suspected irregular migrants in the Lower North Bank Region this week, along with two boat engines, four motorbikes, and 40 gallons of fuel, according to a statement released by the Gambia Immigration Department.
The interception took place in Kerr Sanyang Village during what officials described as a routine joint patrol operation.
Those detained included 10 Senegalese nationals, 7 Gambians, 4 Sierra Leoneans, and 1 Guinean national, according to the department. Two of those intercepted were minors.
The Immigration Department characterized the operation as part of a broader, sustained effort to curb irregular migration and combat transnational crime, including drug and human trafficking, across the region.
“The routine joint security patrol is part of ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration, transnational crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other criminal activities in the region,” the department said in its statement.
Officials reiterated their commitment to working alongside other national security institutions to limit irregular migration and preserve stability throughout the country while safeguarding the lives and property of Gambian citizens and residents alike.
