Kemo Bojang, spokesperson for the UNITE Party, has said the party is seeking to build a lasting political institution capable of governing The Gambia, arguing that its ambitions extend beyond electoral success.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Bojang said the party’s strategy is centered on creating an organization that can endure beyond its founding leaders while offering what he described as a new approach to governance.
“The Gambian people want to see a rebirth of our politics,” Bojang said. “They want to see a new way of doing things and a new governance model. UNITE is offering that alternative to what we have traditionally known.”
Bojang said the party’s registration by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has increased public confidence in the organization and encouraged more Gambians to identify with it.
He said UNITE has spent considerable effort establishing grassroots structures across the country, including in communities that have historically been regarded as difficult to organize politically.
According to Bojang, the party has prioritized introducing itself to communities and engaging residents before seeking their political support, an approach he said has been well received.
“I like to say that we are not building an institution to win an election alone,” he said. “We are building an institution to govern, and we are building an institution that will outlive us.”
Bojang also criticized the government’s handling of the economy, saying many Gambians continue to face rising living costs and worsening economic hardship.
He argued that persistent challenges, including unemployment, irregular migration and security concerns, require stronger policy responses, particularly those aimed at supporting young people.
Bojang said young Gambians who return home after unsuccessful attempts to migrate abroad often struggle to reintegrate because of limited employment and economic opportunities.
He said UNITE believes the country’s current challenges require a different approach to governance, one focused on strengthening institutions and creating opportunities for citizens.
