The spokesman for the Gambia Police Force has called on Gambians to take a more active role in protecting themselves from crime, saying personal safety depends not only on law enforcement but also on individual awareness and precaution.

Speaking in an interview with QTV, the police public relations officer said citizens should remain alert to their surroundings and make thoughtful decisions that reduce their exposure to criminal activity.

“Security is not solely the responsibility of the police or other law enforcement agencies,” he said. “Individuals also have a role to play by being conscious of their environment and taking reasonable precautions.”

He encouraged the public to consider factors such as the time of day they travel, the places they choose to visit, and whether their actions could unnecessarily increase their vulnerability to crime.

The police spokesman also advised against carrying large amounts of cash or displaying valuable items in public when it is not necessary, warning that such behavior can make people more attractive targets for criminals.

He said the government invests substantial resources in maintaining public security through the work of the country’s security services. But, he added, those efforts are most effective when complemented by responsible behavior from members of the public.

The remarks come as concerns over crime have prompted renewed public discussion about safety and crime prevention, with police encouraging residents to adopt practical measures to reduce their risk of becoming victims.
