Demba Sabally, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Security, told farmers in Kartong that continued government support, including access to tractors and other agricultural equipment, would depend on the reelection of President Adama Barrow in the December presidential election.

Addressing a gathering in the coastal settlement, Mr. Sabally, who also serves as deputy national president of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), said a recently distributed power tiller marked only the beginning of the government’s assistance to farmers in the area.

He said he had inspected farmland in Kartong and identified more than three kilometers of land suitable for rice cultivation.

“The only thing between you and tractors and farming tools is to vote for President Barrow to be reelected,” Mr. Sabally told the gathering.

The minister also announced that the community’s chairman, Lamin Jamba Jammeh, would collect 100 bags of organic fertilizer this week, which he said would be distributed to local gardeners free of charge.

Mr. Sabally said the support was being provided on behalf of President Barrow and the NPP. He urged supporters to reach out to residents who back opposition parties, particularly the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), and persuade them to join the ruling party.

The remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of The Gambia’s presidential election scheduled for Dec. 5, 2026, with parties increasing grassroots campaigning across the country.
