President Adama Barrow has assured Gambians that the country will enjoy a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply over the next two to three years, following recent power disruptions that affected parts of the country.

Speaking at a National People’s Party (NPP) mega rally in Brikama on Saturday, 20 June 2026, President Barrow attributed the recent electricity outages to technical challenges, which he said have since been resolved.

Addressing concerns over the power crisis, the President maintained that the disruptions were temporary and expressed confidence in the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s energy sector.

President Barrow also took aim at opposition leader Ousainu Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP), accusing him and his team of attempting to exaggerate the extent of the outages through a video intended to portray the country as being in complete darkness.

“They switched off the lights to make it appear that electricity had gone off so the place would be dark for him to record, but he does not understand that in his video, a light was visible behind him,” Barrow told supporters.

He further alleged that the video was staged to create a misleading impression and criticized Mr. Darboe for claiming that the government lacked concern for the welfare of Gambians.

The President challenged the UDP leader to similarly publicize instances when electricity service is functioning normally, arguing that critics only draw attention to the sector when problems arise.

Barrow said his administration has made unprecedented gains in electricity generation and distribution, asserting that the level of power availability achieved during his tenure had never been experienced in The Gambia since independence.

“I can proudly say that the electricity available during my tenure has never happened before in The Gambia since independence. The work we have done in the electricity sector has not been done by any previous government,” he said.

The President also accused his political opponents of focusing solely on government shortcomings while ignoring development achievements, claiming that some critics benefit politically from public dissatisfaction.

“People only come out to talk when there is a problem, but none of them love The Gambia more than me. Their prayer is for The Gambia’s destruction and suffering so they can get into government, but they do not know who they are against,” he said.

Barrow further attributed his administration’s accomplishments to divine guidance, stating that Allah has blessed his leadership and enabled him to fulfill many of the promises made to the Gambian people.

Turning to the upcoming presidential election, President Barrow said the large turnout at the Brikama rally demonstrated the strength of the NPP and its allied parties. He expressed confidence that the ruling party would secure victory in the 5 December 2026 presidential election.
