ANM Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has dismissed claims that a UDP-led government would pursue acts of revenge if elected, emphasizing that the party remains committed to upholding justice within the bounds of the law.

Speaking in an interview with Mengbe Kering, Darboe stated that ensuring accountability does not equate to violating individual rights.

“Some people claim that a UDP government will come for revenge. People’s rights will not be violated, as that would be inconsistent with the law. However, ensuring that justice is served is not a violation of rights. What we are saying is that there will be justice, but not revenge,” he said.

Darboe argued that failing to address corruption would undermine the sacrifices made in opposing the former regime of Yahya Jammeh. He stressed that turning a blind eye to corruption would render the long-standing struggle against past abuses meaningless.

He also referenced growing public criticism of President Adama Barrow’s administration, noting concerns about corruption and governance. Darboe warned that ignoring such issues could lead to further deterioration in the country’s leadership and accountability standards.

He emphasized that the UDP’s primary focus remains the advancement and development of The Gambia, underpinned by principles of transparency and good governance.

“UDP’s anti-corruption stance dates back to the Jammeh era, when we consistently alerted Gambians to alleged wrongdoing by Jammeh and his associates,” he added.
