The National Assembly Member for Upper Saloum, Hon. Alhagie Mbowe, has reaffirmed that the National Reconciliation Party’s (NRP) support for President Adama Barrow remains firm and has, in fact, grown stronger as The Gambia approaches the December 5, 2026 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Mbowe emphasized that the party’s position has not weakened over time.
“Actually, with the National Reconciliation Party, nothing has actually changed. If anything, I can say that we are as solid as ever. And today, in fact, it is stronger than before,” he stated.
Mbowe noted that the NRP’s continued alliance with President Barrow is consistent with the party’s longstanding political approach of forming coalitions in the national interest. He highlighted the party’s history of working with other political groups, including the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS).
“If you go back to history, NRP actually was in coalition before with UDP. We have also had coalitions before with PDOIS as well, and all the time what we see is the country itself, and that is the reason why we always have our own strategy where we work together, Gambians, and form a formidable force,” he said.
He described the current coalition with President Barrow as a “winning formula,” cautioning against any drastic changes to what he believes is a successful political arrangement.
“Because for one thing, the coalition, I would call it madness to change a winning formula; that is total madness. We have a winning formula,” he said.
“So when you have a winning formula, you can do a tweak here and there, but you just don’t want to change in totality, and that’s the reason why NRP is still very solid and is still very consistent in supporting President Adama Barrow in these coming elections.”
He also clarified that the party’s support for Barrow does not mean the NRP has abandoned its ambition to one day lead the country.
“But again, I must say, as the party leader said, that doesn’t mean that NRP is not interested in the leadership of this country; we are fully interested, but at this point in time all our focus is to support His Excellency President Adama Barrow,” he said.
The Upper Saloum lawmaker also clarified that the party’s backing of President Barrow does not signal a lack of ambition to lead the country in the future.
Mbowe further noted that while President Barrow’s tenure will eventually come to an end, the NRP remains focused on its long-term political trajectory.
“Adam Barrow will not be there forever, and NRP has been in existence before Adam Barrow’s party. In fact, for more than two decades we have been in existence,” he said.
He concluded by expressing confidence in President Barrow’s popularity, describing him as a strong candidate who continues to resonate with the electorate.
“But right now we have a winning formula, and we have a winning candidate that is going to the hearts of the people; that is why we stick with him,” he said.
