The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 73 individuals attempting to embark on irregular migration—commonly referred to as the “backway”—in a series of coordinated operations across the West Coast Region.
The operations were conducted by the Department’s Border Patrol Unit (BPU) based at the Tanji Migration Management Unit (MMU), targeting key coastal communities including Lamin, Faraba, Gunjur, and Tanji.
According to a statement issued by the GID, those intercepted comprise 26 Gambians, 34 Senegalese, six Sierra Leoneans, five Guineans, one Malian, and one Ivorian national.
The Department noted that the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration and safeguard lives, particularly among young people vulnerable to undertaking the perilous journey.
“The interception aligns with the GID’s commitment to deterring youths from engaging in risky irregular migration while promoting safe and regular migration pathways,” the statement said.
