The spokesperson for the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), Kemo Bojang, has dismissed remarks by Seedy Njie, the deputy spokesperson of the ruling National People’s Party, who described ongoing opposition coalition negotiations as a “fatal venture,” saying the opposition is now more experienced, more conscious, and more determined than in previous election cycles.

Mr. Bojang said the comments echoed similar warnings made during the lead-up to the 2016 election, arguing that political history had since demonstrated the importance of sustained opposition cooperation.

“These words aren’t new. Seedy Njie said similar things back in 2016, and we all witnessed how events unfolded afterward,” he said. “History has a way of reminding us why vigilance matters.”

He added that opposition parties involved in the current talks were drawing lessons from past political experiences and would not be distracted by what he described as pressure or political messaging from the ruling party.

According to Mr. Bojang, the stakes surrounding the 2026 presidential election are too significant for internal divisions or personal ambition. He said the focus of the ongoing discussions was national interest and the need for a more unified political front.

“What the country needs at this moment is maturity in leadership and a genuine willingness to put national interest above individual ambitions,” he said.

Mr. Bojang also indicated that participating opposition groups remained open to compromise as they worked toward forming a unified coalition ahead of the December 2026 election.

He said the objective was to establish what he described as a “workable union” grounded in shared principles and mutual respect.

“A coalition grounded in shared principles, mutual respect, and a clear vision can pave the way for meaningful change, and it will happen in shaa Allah,” he said.

Opposition parties and movements have in recent months intensified negotiations aimed at forming a single coalition to challenge President Adama Barrow in the upcoming election. The efforts have drawn criticism from senior figures in the ruling party, who have urged their supporters not to be swayed by the developments.
