The Secretary General and Party Leader of the Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD), Malick Camara, has cautioned Gambians against re-electing President Adama Barrow for a third term, urging voters to exercise restraint ahead of the December 5 presidential election.

Speaking on the Tuesday edition of the political program Politic Kaacha, Mr. Camara said he was concerned about what he described as intensified efforts by the president to secure another term in office.

“The way President Barrow is hustling for his re-election, if he wins, I do not know the future of our country,” he said.

He also referenced remarks by some pro-government supporters who, according to him, had suggested they had “placed their lives at stake” for Mr. Barrow’s re-election bid.

Mr. Camara used the interview to renew calls for a broad opposition alliance, urging opposition parties, civil society actors, and independent political movements to unite ahead of the vote. He said such cooperation was necessary to ensure what he described as a “free, fair, and peaceful election.”

“There is a possibility of opposition unity before December 5 because we have seen something happening in the country that should be put to an end. What is happening is not how a country should be ruled,” he said, adding that efforts to build a coalition would continue.

He further indicated that progress toward a unified opposition front was underway, saying that “before the end of May, everything will be clear,” and noting that another meeting had been scheduled for Saturday.

“All the opposition parties and groups do not have to answer to us now. Those that have come, we commenced decisions with them,” he said.

Mr. Camara added that outreach to parties that had not yet responded was ongoing, as well as communication with independent political movements, which he said were expected to receive formal correspondence by Thursday.
