Ebrima Dibba, a member of the Unite Movement for Change, said the group is preparing to challenge the ruling National People’s Party at all levels of political competition, even as it awaits formal registration by the Independent Electoral Commission.

Speaking on a local radio program on Saturday, Mr. Dibba said the movement intended to match the governing party’s reach across the country. “We will match NPP dalasi to dalasi, tribe to tribe, community to community, region to region, district to district,” he said, signaling an expansive national strategy.

Mr. Dibba also asserted that the movement was gaining traction, particularly among younger voters, and said it was building the capacity to rival the governing party’s political infrastructure.

At the same time, he warned against what he described as potential discrimination targeting the group’s supporters, saying the movement would pursue legal action where necessary. He framed the position as part of a broader commitment to protecting civil liberties.

“UMC would ensure no rights are violated in this country again,” he said, adding that Gambians would not accept a return to abuses associated with the period from 1994 to 2016.
