Kemo Bojang, spokesperson for the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has criticized the administration of President Adama Barrow, stating that many Gambians continue to face significant challenges in accessing basic necessities, including safe drinking water and essential public services.
In an interview with Kerr Fatou, Bojang argued that the country’s development trajectory has seen little progress over the years, with citizens still grappling with longstanding issues.
“Nothing has changed since independence because it’s the same issues we continue to cry over,” he said.
Bojang highlighted ongoing concerns about water safety in parts of the country, citing Bakau as an example. According to him, authorities have previously warned residents about the quality of tap water in the area.
“NAWEC and the Ministry of Health have advised against drinking tap water in Bakau because it is not safe,” he said.
He further noted that many citizens cannot afford alternatives such as bottled water, making the situation particularly difficult for low-income households.
“How many people can afford bottled water? These are the issues we need to focus on as a country,” he added.
Addressing the debate surrounding President Barrow’s potential third-term bid, Bojang argued that term limits should be viewed not only from a legal standpoint but also as a matter of principle.
“The issue of term limits is not just legal; it is also a moral issue,” he stated.
He cautioned against using development initiatives, particularly infrastructure projects like road construction, as justification for extending a leader’s time in office.
Bojang also called on young people to play a more active role in shaping the country’s future and holding leaders accountable.
“Our generation as young Gambians must take responsibility for our future and put checks in place,” he said.
He concluded by expressing broader dissatisfaction with governance in the country, asserting that successive administrations have failed to meet public expectations.
“I think President Barrow and the NPP are taking us for a ride, and until we are ready to stand firm and defend our rights as a people, they will continue to do so. Every government we have had in this country has taken us for a ride, unfortunately,” he said.
