The Alternative Dispute Resolution Secretariat (ADRS) has been named the 2026 recipient of the Peace Maker Award by the Center for African Peace & Conflict Resolution (CAPCR), in recognition of its outstanding contribution to mediation and conflict resolution in The Gambia.
In a press release dated March 3, 2026, ADRS said the award acknowledges its dedicated efforts to provide accessible mediation services, with particular commendation for its work with market women and other vulnerable populations.
“The award recognizes ADRS’s outstanding services in providing mediation and conflict resolution services in The Gambia, with particular commendation for its exemplary work with market women and other vulnerable populations,” the statement read.
According to the release, the selection followed a rigorous nomination and interview process conducted by the CAPCR Board. Each year, CAPCR presents the Peace Maker Award to individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa and among Africans in the diaspora.
Executive Secretary of ADRS, Kumba Jow, welcomed the recognition, describing it as a reaffirmation of the institution’s commitment to inclusive and community-driven justice mechanisms.
“Being recognized by a globally respected peace institution underscores ADRS’s commitment to fostering inclusive, community-driven solutions and reinforces The Gambia’s progress in promoting peaceful conflict resolution,” she said.
The award ceremony is scheduled for April 25, 2026, and is expected to attract more than 300 guests from across the United States, Africa, and Europe. CAPCR has presented the Peacemaker Award annually for 33 years. Past recipients include notable figures such as Nana Akufo-Addo, Danny Glover, and Desmond Tutu.
ADRS operates under The Gambia’s Ministry of Justice and is mandated to provide accessible, efficient, and cost-effective mediation and alternative dispute resolution services nationwide. The institution said the award affirms its ongoing efforts to institutionalize alternative dispute resolution as a sustainable tool for justice and peacebuilding, contributing to social cohesion and community harmony across the country.
