Modou Lamin B Bah, a member of the National Assembly representing Banjul North, has been elected chairperson of the Network of African Parliamentary Committees of Health, elevating The Gambia’s profile in continental health governance.

His election took place at the 17th Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Network of African Parliamentary Committees of Health, held from February 25 to 27 in Lusaka. The announcement was made in a statement issued by The Gambia’s National Assembly.

The position, the statement said, reflects recognition of Mr. Bah’s “dedication to health advocacy and legislative oversight, both at the national and continental levels.”

The conference convened lawmakers and health policy leaders under the theme “Re-positioning the Role of Parliamentarians for Enhancing Health Systems for Emergency Response, Equity, Resilience, and Sustainability in the Context of Attaining Universal Health Coverage (UHC).” Discussions centered on the role of legislatures in shaping policy frameworks capable of withstanding public health emergencies while expanding equitable access to care.

Leading The Gambia’s delegation, Mr. Bah outlined the country’s recent progress and parliamentary commitments aimed at strengthening the national health system. He emphasized the need for sustained stakeholder engagement—including collaboration among governments, civil society, and development partners—as essential to achieving universal health coverage.

His election places a Gambian lawmaker at the helm of a network that works to coordinate parliamentary action across Africa on health financing, oversight, and accountability at a time when many countries are reassessing health system resilience in the wake of global health crises.
