London Corner Installs Solar Street Lights to Boost Safety and Visibility

By Makutu Manneh
Ten solar-powered street lights were installed in London Corner Farokono this week in an effort to enhance safety and visibility in the neighborhood, local officials announced.
The project was led by Ajie Saptieu Jaye, the councillor for London Corner, in collaboration with the Ward Development Committee. According to Jaye, the initiative was financed largely through taxpayer funds returned by the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), covering 60 percent of the project’s cost.
“This is a start,” Jaye said at the installation ceremony. “We are starting at Farokono and then going to the rest of the sub-wards in London Corner. Farokono is the most vulnerable area, but that does not mean we forget about the rest,” she said.
Jaye emphasized that the streetlights belong to the community and urged residents to take ownership of their maintenance. “These lights are funded by your taxes. Protecting them ensures their sustainability for everyone’s benefit,” she said.
The solar streetlights are expected to improve nighttime visibility, deter crime, and provide a safer environment for pedestrians and residents.
