Mansa Sumareh, a member of The Gambia’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP), has publicly called on President Adama Barrow to dismiss two senior cabinet ministers, accusing them of undermining the administration and damaging the president’s public image.

Speaking during an appearance on the political talk show Politic Kaacha, Mr. Sumareh urged the president to remove Hamat N.K. Bah, the minister of lands, regional government and religious affairs, and Musa Drammeh, the minister of fisheries and water resources. He said that certain individuals within the government were working at cross-purposes with the president’s agenda.

Mr. Sumareh sought to distance his criticism from personal animosity, particularly toward Mr. Bah. He said he was not an enemy of the lands minister and noted that he had named one of his sons after him. “But when the truth arises, it must be spoken,” he said.

He accused Mr. Bah of improperly removing local village heads, known as alkalolu, from their positions. In drawing a contrast, Mr. Sumareh pointed out that Mr. Bah’s father had served as an alkalo during the administration of former President Yahya Jammeh and was not dismissed from office despite his son’s political involvement.

Turning to Mr. Drammeh, the fisheries minister, Mr. Sumareh argued that the minister was no longer effectively performing his duties. He cited age and alleged lack of performance as reasons for his call for dismissal.

“We are in an election year,” Mr. Sumareh said. “President Barrow will win because he has worked for the country. But those who are taking the country backward, whether politicians or ministers, must be stopped.”

He concluded by warning that some figures within the government were sabotaging the president’s efforts and suppressing the public, a situation he said required urgent corrective action from the head of state.
