The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) on Saturday, January 24, 2026, intensified its campaign against irregular migration with a sensitization outreach in Soma, in the Lower River Region (LRR), as part of its ongoing Operation Zero Departure initiative.

The campaign, branded “Say No to Backway,” is aimed at discouraging irregular migration while promoting national integrity and human security. It focuses on raising awareness about the risks associated with dangerous migration routes and encouraging lawful and informed mobility.

Speaking on behalf of the director general of immigration, Commissioner Sulayman Kujabi described the initiative as a proactive effort to confront the human cost of irregular migration.

“Every year, sons and daughters leave home with dreams of success, but many never reach their destination, Som people perish in the desert or the sea, others are detained, abused, trafficked, or returned home with deep emotional scars”.

He called on parents, communities, and law enforcement agencies to support the campaign, stressing the need for sustained investment in youth empowerment, skills development, and access to accurate migration information, particularly in rural areas.

Commissioner Musa Keita also emphasized the urgency of the initiative, describing irregular migration as a serious threat to both human security and national integrity. He noted that countless lives continue to be placed at risk along perilous migration routes.

The chairman of the Mansakonko Area Council highlighted government efforts in the Lower River Region to promote youth employment, improve living conditions, and support sustainable livelihoods. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working with the GID in the implementation of its mandate.

According to the GID, the campaign is grounded in advocacy, community engagement, and a call for national unity. Participants stressed that irregular migration is not only a personal risk but a national challenge that requires coordinated action to save lives and safeguard the country’s future.

The event brought together security officials, community leaders, and students. Activities included a symbolic march-past, followed by a stakeholder discussion forum aimed at fostering dialogue and collective responsibility.
