The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) will only support or join a coalition behind a candidate who is credible, electable, and committed to addressing the country’s challenges, according to the party’s administrative secretary, Ebrima Nyang.

Mr. Nyang said any decision to participate in a coalition would be guided strictly by principles rather than political expediency.

“We are going to be led based on principles, principles that we believe that anybody that is to lead will be somebody that is very credible. Somebody that we believe is winnable, somebody that we believe that individual knows the problems that are in this country and can also bring the solutions,” he said.

He added that the GDC is open to either leading a coalition or being part of one, depending on negotiations, but emphasized that the party would not impose its leader on coalition talks.
“Any coalition that we are getting into, we are going with these two mindsets: that is, we can lead the coalition, and we can also be led,” he said.

Mr. Nyang further stated that the party believes a first and second term in office are sufficient for any leader, stressing that national interest must take precedence over personal or partisan considerations.

“For us, the first and second terms are enough, but in the coalition, we need somebody that is credible, we need somebody that we believe is winnable, and we need somebody that is going to put the interest of the country first before anything,” he said.

Looking ahead to the 2026 elections, Mr. Nyang disclosed that the GDC plans to intensify grassroots engagement through house-to-house campaigns, rallies, and public meetings to present its vision and policy proposals to Gambians.

“We believe it is very important to shift from the problems now to the solutions. Every day we talk about problems that are happening in this country. Now we need to focus on solutions,” he said.
