The spokesperson of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), Kemo Bojang, has explained his decision to part ways with the United Democratic Party (UDP), citing a personal conflict between party loyalty and what he believes is service to the Gambian people.

Speaking on the Dialectic Space podcast, Bojang described his departure as the result of unresolved internal issues within the party.

“My letter was very explanatory. I left the party because I didn’t feel comfortable anymore. It’s a complex issue,” he said. “I was asked to leave my executive position at the 2022 Congress in McCarthy. I knew why I was forced to do that. I never really came out to talk about it, but I just didn’t want to keep it that way out of respect for the party.”

Bojang accused the UDP of suppressing internal dissent, arguing that party members who did not openly criticize Talib Bensouda were automatically labelled as his supporters.

“I support Talib because I’ve been part of the success story of Talib. I contributed to that story, and I want to see what the Gambian people are asking for becomes a success,” he emphasized.

The former UDP member slammed critics who have called him a traitor, stating people should respect personal choices.

“My story is my story. You can’t know my story more than I do. You cannot love me more than I do. I made the choice that I believe is the best for myself and my country,” Bojang said.

The UMC spokesperson also called on Gambians to respect individual decisions and refrain from judging others’ political paths.

“We need to stop playing God. You cannot determine who will fail or succeed,” he said. “Whatever we are meant to be or have has already been written and acknowledged by God.”

“We need to stop playing Gun. You cannot tell anyone they are going to fail or succeed,” he said. “Whatever we are supposed to be, whatever we’re supposed to have, has been written and acknowledged by God.”
