Mama Kandeh, Party Leader and Secretary General of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has expressed deep concern over what he described as the persistent failure of electoral and justice systems across Africa. He called for greater accountability, transparency, and reform as The Gambia prepares for its 2026 elections.

Speaking following this weekend’s meeting with his party supporters in Kombo Kiti, Kandeh said Africa’s democratic institutions—meant to safeguard justice and stability—have instead become “sources of chaos and instability” in many countries.

“As I recently addressed my supporters in Kitty, Gambia, I expressed a deep concern that resonates throughout our continent: the failure of our electoral and justice systems. These institutions, which should be the bedrock of democracy, are often the very sources of chaos and instability in Africa,” Kandeh said.

Citing recent events in Cameroon, he noted that the declaration of President Paul Biya as the winner despite widespread allegations of fraud and violence underscores the urgent need for reform.

“A leader who has been in power for over 40 years and still fails to deliver basic governance is a disgrace—not only to Cameroon but to all of Africa,” Kandeh stated.

He urged Africans to unite in demanding fair elections and responsible leadership.

“We must unite in our demand for accountability and transparency. It is time for us to hold our leaders accountable and ensure that our electoral processes are fair and just. We cannot allow the voices of the people to be silenced by corrupt systems that prioritize power over the welfare of citizens,” he said.

Turning to The Gambia, Kandeh called on Gambians to draw lessons from other nations as the 2026 elections approach.“We must ensure that our electoral processes are transparent and that every Gambian has the right to participate fully in our democracy without fear or intimidation,” he said.

Kandeh concluded with a call for continental solidarity and reform. “Let us stand together for a future where democracy thrives, where justice is served, and where the rights of every African are respected. The time for action is now due. We must advocate for a continent that values integrity, accountability, and the rule of law. Together, we can forge a path toward a brighter future for Africa—one where our institutions serve the people and uphold the principles of democracy,” he said.
