Three opposition parties in The Gambia have formed a new political alliance ahead of the country’s 2026 presidential election, describing the move as an effort to unify their platforms and strengthen their bid to challenge the incumbent government.

The National Democratic Party, Gambia Alliance for National Unity, and Alliance Re-Orientation Economic Force said they had signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a coalition to be known as the National Alliance for Reorientation and Economic Freedom (NAREF).

In a statement released on behalf of the alliance, the parties called the agreement “a defining moment” in the country’s political history, signaling what they described as a renewed push for opposition unity.

The alliance said it was founded on a shared commitment to “restore hope, strengthen democratic governance, and deliver meaningful economic transformation,” adding that the partnership reflected a willingness to place national priorities above partisan interests.

Leaders of the three parties emphasized that the formation of NAREF would not undermine broader efforts to build a larger opposition coalition. Instead, they described it as a step toward consolidating those discussions.

“NAREF recognizes and respects the ongoing coalition discussions among opposition parties and movements across the country,” the statement said, adding that its members remained active participants in those talks.

The alliance also framed its creation as a signal of urgency and resolve, arguing that opposition unity was both achievable and necessary ahead of the election. It said the partnership demonstrated “determination, sacrifice, and an unwavering dedication” to pursuing political change through democratic means.

In addition, the group called on political parties, civil society organizations, and youth movements to join what it described as a collective national effort, urging citizens to “rise above division” under the banner of national unity.

The statement concluded by presenting the alliance as a vehicle for political and economic reform, pledging to prioritize “integrity, accountability, and a renewed focus on economic freedom and national reorientation.”

The 2026 presidential election is expected to be a pivotal test for The Gambia’s opposition, which has faced challenges in recent years in forming a unified front against the governing party.
