The Gambia has been elected to lead the African Union Sports Council Region 2 Conference of Ministers for a two-year term, placing Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Y. Badjie at the helm of the regional sports body.
Mr. Badjie will serve as chairperson for the 2026–2028 term, succeeding Nigeria, which previously held the position, according to a statement issued Monday by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The election took place during a virtual meeting of the AUSC Region 2 Conference of Ministers on Sept. 3, when member states selected a new bureau to oversee the organization.
Guinea was elected vice chair, while Cabo Verde was chosen as rapporteur.
The new leadership will guide the Conference of Ministers and coordinate efforts among member countries to strengthen sports development and regional cooperation over the next two years.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports described Mr. Badjie’s election as an important recognition of The Gambia’s growing role in regional sports.
“The election of Hon. Badjie to this regional leadership position is a significant recognition of The Gambia’s growing contribution to sports development and regional cooperation,” the ministry said.
The ministry said The Gambia welcomed the confidence placed in it by fellow member states and pledged to work with countries across the region to strengthen sporting institutions, expand cooperation, and pursue common priorities.
AUSC Region 2 brings together 15 West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
