The Spokesperson for the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), Kemo Bojang, has strongly criticized President Adama Barrow’s potential bid for re-election in 2026, arguing that a decade in leadership should be sufficient for any individual, particularly the head of state.

“Ten years is more than enough time for any individual to lead a political organisation, let alone a nation,” Bojang said in a statement.

He noted that national development is an evolving process that cannot be completed by one leader alone, stressing the need for democratic renewal.

“Development is not something any single leader can ever ‘complete’; it is a continuous, generational process that requires renewal, fresh ideas, and new leadership at different stages,” he said.

Bojang further urged President Barrow to honor his previous commitment to a two-term limit, pointing out that the principles of leadership transcend constitutional allowances.

“While the Constitution may permit him to run again, leadership is not only a legal matter but also a moral one. Beyond what the law allows, there is a higher responsibility to respect and honor one’s own public commitments,” he added.

His remarks come amid growing public speculation regarding the President’s intentions for the 2026 election cycle.

Bojang’s comments are expected to intensify the ongoing national discourse on term limits, governance, and leadership succession in The Gambia.
