The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) has appointed Mustapha Sonko as its new Programme Manager, citing his extensive experience in migration and youth development as a major asset to the Scheme.

In a statement announcing the appointment, NYSS described Sonko as a seasoned professional with a strong background in education, public service, and governance.

“Mr. Sonko brings to this role a wealth of experience in migration and youth development, underpinned by a strong background in education, public service, and governance,” the statement reads.

Sonko is a graduate of The Gambia College and holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Political Science from the University of The Gambia. He also earned a Master’s degree in International Migration and Ethnic Relations from Malmö University in Sweden and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of The Gambia.

He previously served as Secretary General of the University of The Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU) and has been actively involved in youth advocacy and public service.

Confirming his appointment, Sonko expressed enthusiasm about assuming the new role, noting its alignment with his professional focus.

“I am pleased to share that I have assumed the role of Program Manager at the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS),” Sonko said in his statement. “This position aligns strongly with my career path as a migration and youth development specialist, with a clear focus on addressing youth unemployment and irregular migration.”

As he transitions from the National Youth Council to NYSS, Sonko emphasized that his core mission remains unchanged. “As I leave the National Youth Council The Gambia to the NYSS, the mission remains the same, only the platform has changed, to empower youth, create opportunity, and serve the nation”, he said.

He called on stakeholders to join hands with NYSS in empowering young people, including school dropouts, ex-convicts, graduates, and other vulnerable youth cohorts.

“Together, through Reform, Loyalty, Pride, and Service, we can make NYSS an even stronger vehicle for national development and youth empowerment,” he said.

NYSS expressed confidence that Sonko’s leadership, expertise, and commitment will significantly enhance the Scheme’s programmes and overall impact on youth development across the country.
