The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, on Thursday welcomed Senegal’s Minister of Defense, General Birame Diop, to the Assembly as part of a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on defense and security.
General Diop’s visit comes as both countries continue to navigate complex regional security challenges, particularly in cross-border coordination and parliamentary oversight of defense matters. The meeting between the two leaders sought to enhance existing ties and promote peace through collaborative efforts.
Speaking to reporters following the engagement, General Diop underscored the importance of the long standing relationship between The Gambia and Senegal. He noted that their discussions centered on mutual support, institutional collaboration, and the critical role parliaments play in shaping national defense policies.
“We spoke about the criticality of the relationship between our two countries and the importance of working hand in hand to strengthen our bond,” said General Diop. “We also took the opportunity to thank our respective predecessors for laying the foundation for the strong ties we enjoy today.”
The Senegalese minister emphasized the need for continued dialogue and institutional alignment to address the evolving security landscape. He called for regular assessments of the bilateral framework to ensure that both nations are adapting effectively to contemporary challenges.
“Our meeting also highlighted the oversight function of parliament in monitoring the implementation of public policies,” he added. “Members of parliament play a central role in holding the executive accountable and ensuring that the defense sector aligns with national interests.”
Both parties expressed interest in facilitating closer collaboration between the defense committees of the Gambian and Senegalese national assemblies to promote joint legislative efforts in the sector.
Deputy Speaker Njie lauded the leadership of both countries for fostering a climate of cooperation and expressed gratitude for Senegal’s continued support in security and defense-related matters.
“We have discussed a lot which of course is for the common interest of the two countries and security and defense and of course people to people, but we are grateful to the Senegalese government for all the support they continue to give the Gambia in security and defense related matters,”
General Diop was accompanied by The Gambia’s Minister of Defense, Hon. Sering Modou Njie. Following their visit to the National Assembly, the delegation also paid a courtesy call to the Senegalese Embassy in Banjul. The visit concluded with a scheduled meeting with President Adama Barrow at the State House.
