“The Summit will demonstrate the United States’ enduring commitment to Africa, and will underscore the importance of U.S. – Africa relations and increased cooperation on shared global priorities,” President Biden said in a statement shared by the White House on Wednesday. “The U.S.- African Leaders Summit will build on shared values to better foster new economic engagement; reinforce the U.S.-African commitment to democracy and human rights; mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and of future pandemics; work collaboratively to strengthen regional and global health; promote food security; advance peace and security; respond to the climate crisis; and amplify diaspora ties.”

The statement added that the U.S President looks forward to working with African governments, civil society, diaspora communities across the United States, and the privates sector to continue strengthening the shared values of Washington and for the future of U.S. – Africa relations

The December Summit is believed to be part of efforts by the U.S countering the growing influence of China and Russia in Africa.

President Biden, since becoming President, hasn’t yet visited Africa, but so far met with African leaders such as the Presidents of South Africa, Kenya and Egypt.
