President Adama Barrow on Sunday, February 8, 2026, officially launched an electricity access project covering 157 villages in the Central River Region (CRR) North, marking a major milestone in The Gambia’s national power expansion programme.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to achieve universal access to electricity by the end of 2026, ahead of the global 2030 target.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Panchang Village, President Barrow described the project as a gateway to a brighter future for Gambians, particularly those in rural communities. He noted that the development fulfills a key pledge from his 2021 presidential campaign.
“Let me assure the remaining 10 percent of our communities without electricity that my government has made concrete agreements to provide electricity to every community by the end of 2026,” the President said.
He urged citizens to view the project beyond its infrastructure value, emphasizing its transformative social and economic impact. According to President Barrow, the electrification programme is designed to empower rural communities, strengthen education, reduce daily hardships—especially for women—create employment opportunities for young people, and support the growth of a more inclusive and resilient economy.
The President highlighted the benefits of universal electricity access for women, noting that it enables the use of modern equipment, improves food processing efficiency, and supports the expansion of small businesses that sustain households.
As part of the launch activities, President Barrow also switched on transmitters at Nyanga Bantang and Sinchu Jenung, extending electricity supply to several remote communities in CRR North.
