PPP leadership division: Factions face each other in court

35

A faction of the leadership of the People’s Progressive Party has initiated a court action seeking to nullify the election of Papa Njie as the Secretary General of the party.

The case began on Thursday at High Court.

The PPP held a congress in December last year to elect a new leader. Papa Njie who contested for the leadership position of the party defeated former vice president Bakary Bunja Darboe.

However, supporters of Darboe claimed the congress was marred with irregularities. They also said Papa Njie is ineligible to hold their Secretary General position because he is not a member of their party.

The PPP trio, Alhaji Yaya Ceesay, Dodou Taal and Papa Faal, are seeking the court to declare that Papa was not properly elected. They also want the court to declare that the National President Alhagi Lamin Nanko was also not properly appointed.

The three political leaders have also filed an injunction seeking to restrain Papa from acting as Secretary General of the party.

The three political leaders are also asking the court to nullify the December election of Papa and the appointment of their National President Nanko.

However, the defense lawyers of Papa and Nanko have argued that the suit lacks merit since the people who brought do not have the right to bring the case.

Lawyers for the both sides have requested time to adequately address issues relating to the proper filling of the case.

The case resumes on May 30.
